Have you ever finished a full, busy week in your business and thought, “Wait… how did I do all that and still feel behind?”
If so, you’re in good company. I hear some version of that sentence almost every week from the owners I work with. Lawn care companies booked solid through the season. Groomers with a three-week waitlist. Cleaners, handymen, and salon owners who are genuinely great at what they do, and who still lie awake wondering if the numbers add up.
That’s exactly why I started a podcast.
Meet The Business Break
The Business Break, presented by L. Barger Bookkeeping, is a weekly 15-to-20-minute show for small service business owners who would rather be doing the work they love than wrestling with spreadsheets.
New episodes drop every Monday, starting with our trailer on Monday, October 19, and our first full episode on Monday, October 26.
The idea is simple. Most small business owners don’t need another finance lecture. They need a break: a few minutes to step out of the day-to-day, understand one piece of their business a little more clearly, and walk away with one thing they can actually do this week.
Why a bookkeeper started a podcast
Here’s something I’ve learned from sitting across the table from a lot of business owners: the problem is rarely that they’re bad at business. The problem is visibility.
When you’re the one doing the work, scheduling the clients, answering the texts, and driving the van, nobody is handing you a clear view of your numbers. So you make decisions from your bank balance, hope for the best, and carry around a low-grade worry that something on the back end is slipping.
I love this stuff. Truly. Reconciling accounts and building simple systems is my idea of a good time. But I know most owners don’t feel that way, and they shouldn’t have to. My job is to make the money side of your business feel clear and manageable, so you can focus on what you love.
A podcast lets me do a little of that for more people, every single week, whether or not we ever work together.
What you’ll hear on the show
Every episode is built around three rotating topics, plus one segment you can count on every time.
💰 The Money. Bookkeeping, cash flow, profitability, paying yourself, and getting ready for tax season. We’ll talk about things like why a busy business can still feel broke, and what your P&L (your Profit and Loss statement) is actually trying to tell you.
⚙️ Systems. The routines, tools, and processes that make your week lighter. Think getting paid faster, keeping receipts under control, and paperwork that mostly runs itself.
🪑 The Owner’s Corner. The real, human side of running a small business. Overwhelm, boundaries, decision fatigue, and that heavy feeling of being “behind” on the books. No shame here. Ever.
✅ One Thing to Fix This Week. Every episode ends with one practical action you can take in under 30 minutes. Not a 12-step overhaul. One thing. Small, doable wins add up faster than you’d think.
What makes it different
There’s a lot of business content out there. Plenty of it is loud, complicated, or written for companies far bigger than yours. The Business Break is built for owner-operated service businesses with a handful of employees (or none), and it comes with a few promises:
- No jargon without an explanation. If I use a money term, I’ll define it in plain English the first time.
- No shame about being behind. Most owners are. You’re not alone, and it’s fixable.
- Real examples. The groomer, the lawn guy, the cleaner. Businesses that look like yours.
- Short enough to actually finish. One episode fits in a commute, a lunch break, or the drive between jobs.
What’s coming in Season 1
Season 1 runs from October through the end of December, and it’s timed to the season you’re actually in.
Late October: Know Your Numbers. Q4 is here, and it’s the perfect time to get clear before year-end. We kick off with Busy but Broke? Profit vs. Cash Flow, all about why a profitable business can still be cash-tight.
November: Get Year-End Ready. Cleaning things up in November is a whole lot easier than scrambling in January.
December: Close Strong, Plan Smart. Year-end checklists, getting ready for 1099s, and a simple plan for 2027.
Alongside each episode, I’ll publish companion articles here on the website every week, so if you’d rather read than listen (or want the steps written down), you’ll have both.
Your very first One Thing to Fix
You don’t have to wait for Episode 1 to start. Here’s your first one thing to fix:
Put 15 minutes on your calendar next week, just for you and your business.
That’s it. Don’t fill it in yet. Just protect the time. Next Monday’s episode will give you something useful to do with it, and over the coming weeks we’ll turn those 15 minutes into a habit that makes your whole week feel calmer.
